2012 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational: Carleton wins Best in Show!! Photos of the paintings are below. Carleton participates in the Islanders Hawaii Plein Air Painters events; a group of artists who document the life and landscapes of Hawaii.
Each February, hand-picked artists from the Mainland and Hawaii gather for six days of painting everything from Maui's pristine beaches to it's vanishing plantation houses and Lahaina's bustling town scene.
"Plein air" painting is named for a French term meaning "painting outdoors." It is a technique well-suited to Maui's lush landscapes and inspiring vistas. The term refers to both the act of painting outdoors and the look of the resulting paintings, which capture the light and feel of the outdoor scene.
